Dummies Guide to Voting
- Find out whether you are eligible to vote.
- Read the details surrounding how to format your vote.
- Copy the voting template into a new plain text email.
- Address it to vote[at]dfey[dot]org and give the subject "[VOTE] Logo Competition" (without quotation marks)
- Visit the submissions page and rank the logos in your email, based on the submission guidelines
- Read the details about when the results will be announced and how the voting process is taking place.
- Send off your vote!
Eligibility
- Any young person who has previously attended a DFEY-NW meeting, is eligible to vote.
- A young person who has been judged by those who have previously attended a DFEY-NW meeting, to have had a non-minor role in the group via the mailing list, IRC or microblogging is also eligible to vote.
Currently the only people who have not attended a meeting but are believed to have had non-minor role in the group are Stephen Mount (stemount), Connor Smith (clsmith), Ross Woodruff (rossw), Scott Dennison (darthcrap), James Stoker (JStoker), Joe M (tty17/n3hima) and Robert Leverington (roberthl).
If there is another DFEY-NW meeting before the voting deadline, all those young people who attended will be eligible to vote. Likewise if more people take a non-minor role in the group they potentially could be eligible to vote.
How To Format Your Vote
- Voting shall take place by sending the following template to vote[at]dfey[dot]org with the subject "[VOTE] Logo Competition" (without quotation marks), votes that do not have this subject or deviate from the template will be discarded.
- Votes should be sent in plain text only.
- Do not add anything before the voting template.
- Every single candidate should be awarded a rank, votes that contain unranked candidates will be discarded.
- Accepted votes will also be forwarded to the dfey-nw-discuss mailing list for transparency, if you do not want your vote to be public then do not vote.
Voting Template
Place the rank you are awarding each candidate inside the square brackets to the left of the logo name. For example, if you were awarding "Example #1" a rank of 15 you would write in your e-mail to vote[at]dfey[dot]org:
[15] Example #1
The following is the voting template you should use, please award a rank to every single candidate. The numbers you see beside candidates are purely for administrative purposes and do not indicate anything. Candidates are ordered by date of their authors first candidate submission, and then date of the candidates submission.

Logo Brief
Logos were submitted on the following basis:
- Should be easily recognisable, visually pleasing and easily reproduced in different mediums.
- Should echo themes of Digital Freedom, Technology, Young People and Education.
- Should be submitted in SVG format, though high resolution bitmap might be acceptable.
- Ideally, should be created solely using free software but entries created using non-free software will be accepted.
- Ideally, shouldn't use that many different primary colours.
- All entries must be licenced under Creative Commons Zero Licence - legalcode.
Voting Timeline
- Voting will begin on Friday 19th June 2009 at 00:01 BST, any votes sent before this date will be discarded (and it may not be possible to inform you of this).
- Voting will close on Friday 3rd July 2009 at 23:59 BST, any votes sent after this date will be discarded.
After the final day of voting the results will be computed using the Schulze Method by the vote moderator (Robert Leverington) via the debian-vote tool, given that all accepted votes are also forwarded to the list it will be possible for anyone interested to verify the final results.
The results will be officially announced via the mailing list on Saturday 4th July at 12:00 BST. The e-mail will prominently indicate the winning logo and the first runner up, aswell as include a complete list of results and a copy of the tally file used to compute the results. The winner and first runner up will also be announced via the #dfey tag on Identi.ca, any other source is not official.
How your vote will be processed
- You will receive confirmation on or before the final day of voting if your vote was counted.
- Self-voting is allowed to ensure that logos submitted by voters are not unfairly disadvantaged; the voting method used will compensate for any unfair voting, however voters are also expected to vote fairly (i.e. not place their logo at the top just to win).
After sending your vote to the address you will receive confirmation of receipt. This is not confirmation that the vote has been counted, this will come later on once it has been incorporated in to the voting tally.
If your vote is discarded we will endeavour to inform you as soon as possible, however no guarantees can be made; you are advised to vote as early as possible to avoid disappointment if your vote is discarded.
Any questions regarding the process can be asked on the mailing list or by directly contacting the vote moderator (vote-moderator[at]dfey[dot]org).
